This paper will discuss how player experiences with commercial war games for PC and console can be studied using qualitative methods. When studying the experiences that players have with commercial war games, it is essential to employ methods that take into the account the textual dimension of the game (the game content) as well as the meaning-making processes that takes place inside the player (the player experiences). For this end, this paper will argue for the use of methods informed by ethnography and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.
