Methodological Occidentism: A Useful Concept to Frame a Western Mindset?

Christine Smith-Simonsen, UiT Tromsø

Knowledge production, as well as the production of media representations and games, is embedded in the cultural setting of the producers. There are already many acknowledged concepts that address various problems and aspects related to this, like cultural blindspots, cultural hegemony, orientalism, methodological nationalism. The present contribution is an attempt to introduce a new concept that covers this problem when set in a Western cultural setting, Methodological Occidentism, and to discuss whether it can be useful for addressing a Western bias in game development and production.
